ChatGPT and Google now offer virtual try-on: does your Shopify store still need its own?

By Thomas Dubnight, Prevyou team · Published · 4 min read

Neither ChatGPT nor Google offers a try-on tool you can add to your Shopify store: both work inside their own platforms, for shoppers browsing there. ChatGPT added a Try On button to its shopping results on 1 October 2026, and Google offers try-on in Search, Shopping and Images in the United States, Australia, Canada and Japan. They get more shoppers used to seeing products on their own photo, which makes try-on on your product pages more expected, not less useful.

What did ChatGPT launch?

On 1 October 2026, OpenAI launched a Try On button in ChatGPT’s shopping results, worldwide. Shoppers upload a selfie or a full-body photo and see clothing and accessories on themselves, and they can save products to a Favorites library to come back to later.

Everything happens inside ChatGPT: the shopper is not on your store while trying the item on. The announcement describes a feature for shoppers and does not mention any tool or setting for merchants.

What does Google’s try-on do?

Google’s try-on works in Google Search, Google Shopping and Google Images, on apparel from its Shopping Graph: tops, bottoms, dresses and, since October 2025, shoes. The shopper adds a photo of themselves and sees the item on it; since December 2025 a selfie is enough in the United States. To buy, they continue to the merchant’s website.

It launched in the United States, then reached Australia, Canada and Japan in October 2025, and French-speaking users in Canada in March 2026. Google’s announcements do not mention France or the rest of Europe, nor jewelry, watches or eyewear.

What does it change for your store?

These launches put virtual try-on in front of a very large audience. Shoppers who discover it in ChatGPT or Google will look for it again, and a product page without it can feel less helpful than the search result that led there.

They also change where the first try-on can happen. If your products appear in Google Shopping or in ChatGPT’s shopping results, some shoppers may try them on there before reaching your store. Most shoppers still arrive from your ads, social media, email and direct visits, where only try-on on your own site is available.

When is try-on on your own store worth it?

  • You sell clothing, shoes or bags and most of your traffic does not come from ChatGPT or Google Shopping.
  • You sell eyewear, jewelry or watches, which Google’s try-on does not cover and which need a face or hand photo to look right.
  • You want shoppers to build complete looks from your own catalog and add them to the cart in one go.
  • You sell in France or elsewhere in Europe, where Google has not announced its try-on.
  • You want to measure try-ons, add-to-carts and orders after try-on in your own dashboard.

What is Prevyou?

Prevyou is an AI virtual try-on app built for Shopify stores. Your shoppers upload one photo and see your products on themselves, right on your product pages, then add them to the cart without leaving your store.

  • Clothing, shoes, bags, eyewear, jewelry and watches, with the right photo for each item: full length, face or hand.
  • Complete the look: shoppers try several of your products on the same photo and add the whole outfit to the cart, or go straight to checkout.
  • A “Try it on” button on product pages, plus optional badges on the home page, collections and cart, styled like your theme.
  • In your shoppers’ language (8 languages), set up in the theme editor without code, tested on more than 50 Shopify themes.
  • 10 free try-ons every month, then pay as you go from $0.20 to $0.09 per try-on, or plans from $29 per month. A failed try-on is never billed.
  • The shopper photo is deleted as soon as the result is ready, the result within 24 hours, and photos are never used to train AI.
  • Prevyou will soon be available on the Shopify App Store. In the meantime, contact us to install it on your store.

How do you add virtual try-on to your Shopify store?

  • Install the try-on app from the Shopify App Store.
  • In the theme editor, turn on the app embed: the “Try it on” button appears under add to cart.
  • Choose which products and collections offer try-on, then test it with your own photo.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add ChatGPT’s try-on to my Shopify store?

No. ChatGPT’s Try On button works inside ChatGPT’s shopping results. To offer try-on on your product pages, you need a try-on app installed on your store.

Is Google’s try-on available in France?

Google’s announcements cover the United States, Australia, Canada (including in French since March 2026) and Japan. They do not mention France or the rest of Europe.

Will shoppers still use try-on on my store if ChatGPT offers it?

Yes, as long as they shop on your store: ChatGPT’s try-on is only available inside ChatGPT. Shoppers who already know try-on from ChatGPT or Google tend to recognise and use the button faster.

Does Prevyou use ChatGPT?

Prevyou generates try-on images with an OpenAI image model through its API. It is not ChatGPT’s Try On feature: the try-on happens on your store, photos are never used to train AI, and Prevyou deletes the shopper photo as soon as the result is ready.
